Spend X Save vs Toshl

Toshl is one of the best-value expense trackers available, and its free tier is unusually generous. It handles multiple currencies. The difference between it and this product is what each is trying to be.

What Toshl is genuinely good at

Toshl is a well-built expense tracker with a free tier that actually works — two accounts, no card required. Paid plans start around USD 4.99 a month, which makes it the cheapest credible option in this comparison.

It is good at fast manual entry, it handles tags and multiple currencies, and its reporting is clear. If what you want is to know where your money goes each month and nothing more, Toshl does that competently for very little.

Where it is the wrong shape for a cross-border household

Toshl tracks *expenses*. It is not built around what you are *worth*, and it does not think about accounts as balances that grow over time.

For a household with an SGD salary, an MYR mortgage or family obligation, and an investment account somewhere in between, that is the wrong centre of gravity. You will get a good answer to "what did I spend this month?" and no answer to "am I actually getting ahead across both countries?"

The transfer problem is the same one every expense-first tool has:

  • Sending money home is two entries in two currencies that have no relationship to each other, so the month looks like a large loss of two different amounts.
  • Nothing computes the rate you achieved. That is the number that tells you whether your remittance channel is any good, and it is invisible.
  • There is no statement import for MY or SG banks, so history has to be entered by hand — which for most people means it never gets entered.

How Spend X Save differs

We start from balances and net worth, not from a list of expenses. Accounts hold their own currency, investments are valued over time, and the question "what is this household worth across two countries" has a real answer that never adds ringgit to dollars.

Transfers are one movement with two halves, excluded from spending, and the pair records the achieved rate. Statements import from local banks so the history actually exists. Goals and recurring detection work against the same balances, so the app can tell you what is committed each month and how close you are to a target.

The trade is that we cost more than Toshl, and if all you need is an expense tracker, that extra buys you things you do not want.

Where Toshl is the better choice

If your finances are mostly single-currency spending and you want an inexpensive tracker with a usable free tier, Toshl is the better answer and cheaper by a wide margin.

It is also the better choice if you hold currencies outside the eleven we support, or if you prefer a tool that stays out of the way rather than holding your whole balance sheet.

Common questions

Does Toshl support multiple currencies?
Yes, and its free tier is genuinely usable, which is unusual in this category. The limitation for this audience is not currency support — it is that Toshl is an expense tracker rather than a net-worth tool, so it does not answer questions about balances growing over time.
Is Toshl cheaper than Spend X Save?
Yes. Its paid plans start around USD 4.99 a month and its free tier is real, against RM19 a month for Pro here. If expense tracking is all you need, Toshl is better value and there is no reason to pay us more.
