Spend X Save vs Money Lover

Money Lover is one of the most widely used money apps in Southeast Asia, and for good reason: it is free, it is friendly, and it covers the basics well. The question for a Malaysia–Singapore household is whether the free version is doing enough with two currencies.

What Money Lover does well

It is free, fast to set up, and easy enough that people actually keep using it. Wallets, budgets and reminders cover the everyday cases, and it supports several currencies.

For a student or someone tracking a single spending account, it is a perfectly reasonable choice and this product is not competing for that job.

Why it is not the right tool for this household

Two things get in the way once money lives in two countries.

The first is advertising. A free, ad-supported app has to earn money from your attention, and that shapes the product — what gets built, what gets promoted, and what happens to what it knows about you. There is no version of an ad-funded finance app where your data is not part of the business model.

The second is depth on currencies. Supporting several currencies is not the same as understanding a cross-border household. Sending money home becomes two unrelated entries, so a month with a large remittance looks like a disaster in one currency and unexplained income in the other, and the rate you actually got is never computed or stored.

For someone moving money home every month — which is most of this audience — that is the central transaction of the household, and it is the one the app has nothing to say about.

How Spend X Save differs

There is no advertising, and it is not a plan to add advertising later. You pay for Pro, so you are the customer rather than the product, and your financial data is never sold or shared.

Balances stay per currency and are never wrongly merged. Transfers are linked pairs excluded from spending that report the real achieved rate. Statements import from local banks in CSV, PDF or pasted text, with every row reviewed before saving.

The free tier covers three accounts and the last six months of history, free forever, which is enough to see whether it fits before paying anything.

Where Money Lover is the better choice

If you want free, you are tracking one currency day to day, and advertising does not bother you, Money Lover is the better value — it costs nothing.

It is also a reasonable choice if you mainly want a light mobile expense log rather than a record of net worth across accounts and currencies.

Common questions

Is Money Lover free?
Yes, with advertising, and there is a one-time purchase to remove them. That is a very different business model from a subscription — with ads, your attention is part of what pays for the product.
Does Spend X Save show ads?
No, and there are no plans to. The plan’s own arithmetic rules it out: at realistic MY/SG ad rates you would need roughly 30,000 page views a month to earn about USD 100 — which is less than three Pro subscribers. Advertising would pay less than subscriptions while making the product worse.

The personal finance app for Malaysia–Singapore households — track SGD and MYR together, in one net worth, without pretending one of them doesn’t exist.
